South Somerset is a great place to explore and enjoy the countryside. With a rights of way network extending over 1,100 miles of path and tracks, it's perfect for ramblers, cyclists and walkers. There are cycle routes that run close by through Merriott.
There are many gardens to visit in the area and most are within a 10 mile radius; Barrington Court (NT), Forde Abbey, East Lambrook Manor, Tintinhull (NT), Mapperton and Montacute (NT). Further afield there is the 'The Newt' in Bruton and Piet Oudolf's garden at Hauser and Wirth, also Athelhampton, Abbotsbury gardens, Minterne and Burrow Farm. There are several gardens that open under the National Gardens Scheme nearby and some villages also open their gardens.
There is a lively community of artists, craftsmen and musicians in the area and during the spring, summer and autumn there is usually a festival, fair or fete not too far away.
A visit to the Cider makers, Perry’s at Dowlish Wake is fascinating especially in September /October when the cider is made, also Burrow Hill, the home of Somerset Cider Brandy, you can see how the cider and brandy is made.
Nearby on the Levels at Mulchelney you may like to visit the John Leach Pottery. Also David Brown in Merriott and Eeles pottery in Mosterton or Paul at Barrington Pottery, Barrington Court.
The Jurassic coast in West Dorset is just 12 miles away at West Bay, Lyme Regis is about 15 miles, just ½ hour drive. Bridport is a lively town especially on market days, Wednesday and Saturday.
